In 1972 John Poffenberger was asked by a local soccer group, Soccer association for Youth, to be their lagal advisor and to serve on their board. This ignited in him a keen interest in soccer, so much so that he began a soccer program in his own community.

He and his wife, Nancy, began coaching when their boys were in the 2nd and 3rd grades, and continued for 12 years.
